In classical education, children learn in three phases according to their developmental stage. These stages are called grammar (K–6), logic or dialectic (grades 7–9), and rhetoric (grades 10–12). In the grammar stage, the focus is memorizing through songs, chants, and rhymes.

In the dialectic or logic stage, students learn reasoning and how to debate with wisdom and eloquence. In the rhetoric stage, children study and practice the art of persuasive speaking and effective writing. In a classical education, you will find children exposed to and studying various liberal arts, Latin or Greek, and music composition.
