We absolutely love our morning nature study time! At first glance I worried it was “too simple”, but diving in and getting the recommended living books to read aloud with the study, AND making the crafts, AND baking the recipes, I quickly realized I was so mistaken! There’s everything beautiful you could possibly want to expose your child to. It is simply explained which makes teaching science to my daughter a breeze, and the content is so rich, it leaves a lasting effect on us. Super thankful!

Beautiful! But missing a few things for me.

The Autumn study is filled with beautiful images and anatomy diagrams of the different themes each week (i.e. anatomy of an eagle, mushroom, etc.). The hand rhymes are fun and the paintings included are great!

A couple things to note: she recommends getting The Handbook of Nature Study book. I thought it would maybe be possible to do the study without this book, but you definitely need it. Unlike other studies I've used from other companies, this one doesn't really include any teaching information on the weekly topic, aside from the anatomy of and types of (i.e. varieties of apples). So there isn't much to learn about the topic included in the study, which was kind of a bummer given the cost of the unit. For example, the moon phases unit provides a nice graphic of the different phases, but no description about what they are or what they mean. And this is true of all of the lessons leading to the moon phases as well.

Another thing that would be helpful: the teacher guide does not include the weekly poem, song, painting and hand rhyme that you'll do with your kids. I didn't realize this before printing and binding my guide and the student sheets, so I was always needing to use my kids' notebooks. It would be so helpful if these were included in the teacher guide!

Overall, I like the variety of topics and graphics, I just wish the unit provided actual material to teach and that you didn't need to look all of that up separately.

        The missing piece

Last year I set out to homeschool my kids and I felt totally bewildered by what curriculum to choose. I bumbled through and found a few that were recommended to me, but they lacked the wonder, beautiful and luster I was searching for when I imagined homeschooling. I'm a trained public school teacher, so when I imagined homeschooling, I imagined the major advantage of homeschooling is we could be far more free. Flash forward to this year, I was still feeling that lacking in our curriculum choices. Although I was happy with the basic subjects, I was missing something. A friend of mine told me about Treehouse and after reviewing it, I was absolutely THRILLED! Not only was it beautiful, it included that element that I was searching for.... it's like a prepared nature feast! All I needed to do was print the material and the teacher in me came alive again. Our lessons are the best part of our day and it's added so much fun to our weekly routine. My kids love the poems and folk songs, I love artist/art study, the illustrations are gorgeous that my children are so drawn to learn more about each subject. I highly recommend this material to anyone who is looking for a beautiful curriculum to add some luster to your homeschool routine!
