Overview of Thunder from the Sea
After living in a Mission orphanage on the Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland for most of his life, 13-year-old Tom Campbell is sent to live and work with Enoch Murray and his wife Fiona. Tom has always wanted a family and a dog of his own, but he is worried. Will he fit in with his new family? Will they want him to stay with them when they find out their family is growing? When Tom rescues a Newfoundland dog from the sea during a terrible storm, his life changes again. Thunder is everything Tom ever wanted in a dog. He is brave and smart and strong. But will Tom be able to keep Thunder? Will he ever have all that he has dreamed about? Tom is a kind boy with a good heart and he knows hard work. Readers will soon know how much he cares for his new family and for Thunder. Thunder from the Sea is a wonderful story of family, belonging, and community. Tom comes to see that he is loved and cared for and that the people in his community are always supportive of one another, though they make mistakes. This story will take readers on a thrilling journey of survival, kindness, and love, including a daring rescue. Tom’s strong bond with Thunder adds a comforting warmth to the story, highlighting the importance of the connection between humans and animals.
