Overview of Rascal
Rascal: A Memoir of a Better Era by Sterling North is a semi-autobiographical children’s book by Sterling North about his childhood in Wisconsin during the last year of World War I. The story chronicles the days of 11-year-old Sterling North, who captures and befriends a baby raccoon he names Rascal. Sterling and Rascal adventure together while the world around them is changing with industrialization on the horizon and World War I drawing to a close.
Rascal is a coming of age story intertwined with loss — loss of innocence, family, and friends. Sterling is forced to make many of life’s difficult choices alone as he grows into a young man. The book compares Sterling’s relationships with animals to the adults around him. Rascal was a 1964 Newbery Honor book, won the 1964 Lewis Carroll Shelf Award, and won the 1966 Sequoyah Book Award.

These studies are so much fun! As my daughters became readers and I started more read alouds, I wasn’t sure what type of questions or fun activities to incorporate and now problem solved. Thank you!!

Fun, comprehensive and simple!
Just started Kindergarten with my 5 year old and preschool with my 3 year old and we love doing family book clubs and reading chapter books together with dad in the evenings! I wanted to choose books that we all would enjoy and have follow up activities if they wanted to dive deeper! Treehouse book studies have been the solution! Some weeks we just read the book, some weeks we go deeper with the recommended videos, activities and books. As my kids get older we will add more of the bonus activities in (and reread the books!), but right now, we are having fun reading longer books as a family and loving literature together! Can’t recommend these studies enough.

Timeless Classics
My family has been using Treehouse Schoolhouse book studies for a year now and will continue using them. As a parent, I look for these timeless classics. They are a perfect addition to our homeschool book club! Caddie Woodlawn is heartwarming tale very similar to the Little House series.
