Overview of The Door in the Wall
The Door in the Wall by Marguerite de Angeli is a historical novel set in medieval England about a young boy named Robin, the son of a nobleman, who dreams of becoming a knight. When Robin falls ill and becomes paralyzed, losing the use of his legs, he becomes hopeless, realizing his dreams will never be realized. When his parents are away, Robin is left under the care of Brother Luke, a kind monk who teaches him patience, resilience, and that when one path is blocked, another can be discovered.
With the help of Brother Luke and others, Robin learns to adapt to his new circumstances. Eventually, he finds a way to serve his kingdom despite his disability, proving his courage and worth. The novel emphasizes themes of perseverance, inner strength, overcoming challenges and disappointments, and the importance of finding opportunities even in difficult times. Through Robin’s journey, the story delivers a powerful message about overcoming adversity and discovering one’s true potential.
The novel is the winner of the 1950 Newbery Medal.

Awesome Book Studies
We used the Twenty-One Balloons book study and are now starting the Summer of the Monkeys! My kids and I really enjoy these studies! All the extras that come with them really makes it worthwhile! We enjoy unit studies and the fact that we can learn a little geography, Science and history all while reading rich literature is the best! I have purchased a couple others but haven't used them, but we look forward to doing more!
