Overview of The Sign of the Beaver

The Sign of the Beaver is a children’s historical novel that follows 13-year-old Matt Hallowell, an 18th-century American settler in Maine. After he and his father build a log cabin in the wilderness, Matt goes on many adventures as he is left alone to guard the cabin when his father leaves to retrieve the rest of their family.

While guarding the cabin, Matt learns how to survive in the wilderness with help from an Indian chief’s grandson, Attean, and his family. As Matt questions whether or not his father will return, he is invited to join the Beaver tribe and move north.

This coming-of-age story explores survival in the wilderness, historical themes, cultural differences, nature, and so much more. It is the winner of two Newbery Medals and a Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal.

R., it’s not really fair that you trash all the work these people spent doing this guide because it offended you. Perhaps try and not take things personally and use what works for you and ignore what doesn’t. We can’t go about life feeling offended by history (no matter how awful) or other people’s views.

You Couldn’t Pay Me to Use This Guide

Not one to mince words, I will get straight to the point. This book, “The Sign of the Beaver,” is a horribly offensive representation of Native American people. Even the introduction by Joseph Bruchac talks about the criticism from Native Americans. I thought it wouldn’t be that bad and I’d just supplement with great books about Native Americans. But why should I have to? As a person of color, it’s infuriating to have to find supplemental resources to compensate for some literature and authors poor choices of words and phrases. I recognize that some literature is a direct reflection of their time period, but this book was published in 1983. Not only do I find the author at fault, but also the group of people who selected this book for a study guide. I think either disclaimers should be listed on the page before you buy this guide or they need a more diverse team, or someone to spot these issues. This was not my first treehouse schoolhouse purchase, but I’m certain I won’t be purchasing more moving forward.
