Overview of Sarah Whitcher's Story

Set in the late 1700s, Sarah Whitcher’s Story follows the disappearance of a 4-year-old girl who wanders off while berry picking one afternoon. When Sarah does not return home, her family quickly gathers neighbors to form a search party, scouring the woods near her home in hopes of finding her. While alone in the forest, Sarah survives in unexpected ways. She encounters a bear, who she mistakes for her beloved dog, Ollie, and believes the animal is caring for her. Days pass before a mysterious stranger appears, bringing new hope to the search. Ma’s fierce determination, Pa’s steadfast faith that Sarah will return, and the kindness of an unexpected stranger ultimately lead to Sarah’s reunion with her family. This heartfelt story highlights courage, faith, and the enduring goodness found in community and compassion.

Book Disclaimer

Because the premise involves a young child lost in the wilderness, some parts of the story may feel frightening to young readers. In addition, the idea of a bear caring for a child is not realistic. While the story is told gently and emphasizes themes of kindness and hope, it may raise questions for children. Parents may wish to use this opportunity to discuss outdoor safety, staying close to trusted adults, and the importance of never approaching wild animals.
