Overview of Rascal
Rascal: A Memoir of a Better Era, is a semi-autobiographical children’s book by Sterling North about his childhood in Wisconsin during the last year of World War I. The story chronicles the days of 11-year-old Sterling North, who captures and befriends a baby raccoon he names Rascal. Sterling and Rascal adventure together while the world around them is changing with industrialization on the horizon and World War I drawing to a close.
Rascal is a coming of age story intertwined with loss — loss of innocence, family, and friends. Sterling is forced to make many of life’s difficult choices alone as he grows into a young man. The book compares Sterling’s relationships with animals to the adults around him. Rascal was a 1964 Newbery Honor book, won the 1964 Lewis Carroll Shelf Award, and won the 1966 Sequoyah Book Award.

This is so thoughtfully written to engage our kiddos with the book in creative and fun ways. Thank you!
R., it’s not really fair that you trash all the work these people spent doing this guide because it offended you. Perhaps try and not take things personally and use what works for you and ignore what doesn’t. We can’t go about life feeling offended by history (no matter how awful) or other people’s views.
My kids and I are almost through this book/study and we have loved them SO much. The book is so rich and hilarious and provides so many opportunities for deep dives, and the book study was so thoughtfully created and truly brings the book to life. I’ve already bought two more studies since and I hope they keep coming!
We have enjoyed our first book club purchase! We are reading independently and completing the activities then will be joining cousins at the end for a "book club" party! We really like the supplemental videos and activities provided to enhance the read aloud experience.
I was so excited to purchase this book club curriculum!, it’s exactly what we have been looking for!
