As I began to write An Expectant Easter, I knew that one of the very first things I needed to do was gather the best of the best Easter picture books. I scoured blogs, asked my friends in my Instagram stories, and searched online. Easter books by the dozens came into my home and I read each and every one.
In this blog post I am sharing my favorite books to read with children in the weeks leading up to Easter, plus a free Easter booklist for children. Some are Christ-centered, some are full of bunnies and eggs, and some celebrate various cultures and Easter traditions. All of them are filled with lovely words and illustrations.

My favorite Easter picture books for children
These are my favorite Easter picture books to read to my children.
The Legend of the Easter Robin by Dandi Daley Mackall

The Legend of the Easter Robin is a sweet story told by a grandmother to her granddaughter of a robin who saw Jesus struggling and soared to help him. This story reminds Christians everywhere how much Jesus sacrificed for us and how much he loves us.
The Tale of Three Trees retold by Angela Elwell Hunt

This story tells of three trees who all have dreams of what they want to become. One tree wants to be a treasure chest, the second desires to be a ship that carries kings, and the last wants to stay and grow tall to point to heaven. They all become various things that are a part of the story of Jesus’ birth, life, and death, but I won’t give it all away. It’s a must read!
Easter in the Garden by Pamela Kennedy

Easter in the Garden creatively retells the first Easter as seen through a child’s eyes. It tells of the story of a young boy who observed Jesus on the cross, as well as the resurrection. He has conversations with his mother about what he sees and what it means.
The Garden, the Curtain, and the Cross by Karl Laferton

This book is a beautiful and creative Gospel presentation that focuses on Jesus’ redemption for our sin. Children will learn why Jesus died and rose again and why that’s the best news ever.
