Thanksgiving Picture Books for Kids [Free Book List]

September 17, 2024 Treehouse Schoolhouse

With autumn on the horizon, I love thinking about the upcoming holidays and how we will celebrate them in my family and our homeschool. For me, Thanksgiving is such a wonderful time of year. I love reflecting on God’s blessings, cooking with family and enjoying great food, and hosting gatherings that foster community and togetherness. Leading up to Thanksgiving, I love teaching the kids the history of  the first Thanksgiving and facilitating the conversation of gratitude to God and others. For many years I have wished there were a resource to make this even more engaging and intentional.

This year I am excited to share a new Thanksgiving unit study from Treehouse Schoolhouse A Treasured Thanksgiving, coming October 7.

A Treasured Thanksgiving holiday unit study

A Treasured Thanksgiving is a Charlotte Mason-inspired curriculum designed with your whole family in mind. It’s an invitation to study the historical Thanksgiving story in a hands-on way. Through Scripture, poetry, art studies, picture books, projects, baking, geography, and narration, your family will spend the two weeks before Thanksgiving connecting together and focusing on the meaning of the holiday. Dive deep into themes like the Pilgrim’s voyage to America, the Wampanoag people, the First Encounters, the First Thanksgiving, and the relationship between the Pilgrims and Native Americans in the first year. Featuring a robust book list of picture books and chapter books, this study will provide resources for the whole family.

Thanksgiving picture books for kids

I love to sit and read new books and old favorites with tea or a treat as I read aloud and have my children narrate the story back to me. I love having picture books that share different stories and viewpoints related to the holiday, so my children can learn and grow together. For my older children, I love to have chapter books for them to dive into and explore topics they show interest in.

This list includes books about Pilgrims, the Mayflower, Native Americans, Squanto, and other historical figures connected to the holiday. It includes both picture books and chapter books.

This book list is designed to supplement and coordinate with the 2-week A Treasured Thanksgiving unit study, or can be enjoyed on its own. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
